Week 6 - Day 4

Read James 3:1-12.

1. James has previously mentioned the tongue. What did he say about it in 1:26? How does that verse relate to this entire section on the tongue?

2. The practical book of Proverbs has much to say about our words! Ask God to speak to you personally through these scriptures. Read them and write down the gist of the message and your insights. Note parallels to James.
a. Prov. 10:8
b. Prov. 10:11
c. Prov. 10:21
d. Prov. 11:9
e. Prov. 12:18
f. Prov. 12:25
g. Prov. 13:3
h. Prov. 16:27
i. Prov. 17:14
j. Prov. 18:7
k. Prov. 18:21
l. Prov. 26:22

3. Sharing Question: Which of the above scriptures was most meaningful to you? Why? Did God convict you of anything that you need to change in your communication with others?

Stronger Jeans (optional): Use your previous familiarity with the scriptures to think of biblical stories that relate to the use of words. Look them up and reread them.

4. Responding to God: Draw a picture (just do it!) of one of James’ illustrations in 3:1-12. Talk to God about anything that today’s lesson has surfaced in your life.

Proverbs 12:18 spoke to me the most 'Speaking recklessly is like the thrusts of a sword, but the words of the wise bring healing'. I want to be a person that brings healing to others and not pain. I found the fact the scripture reads 'the wise bring healing' very convicting. It tells me that we can be caring and compassionate but if we are not wise we can unintentionally hurt someone. There are probably many times I hurt someone on accident because I wasn’t thinking or had lack of information.

Prov. 17:14 Starting a quarrel is like breaching a dam; so drop the matter before a dispute breaks out.

I'm not usually afraid of confrontation but this verse gave me pause. Sometimes even if I am justified in saying something, it's just better to not say it to keep the peace. Lord, I just need your guidance when to say something or not.

Proverbs 12:18 spoke to me the most. We recently saw a movie about the Spartans and Persians and there was alot of sword thrusting. My husband and I had some words last night, not yelling or anything but when I read that verse I pictured that sword thrusting in him. It was such a vivid picture in my mind I stopped my study and called him at work and told him I was sorry about any words I said lastnight that were hurtful to him. Of course his answer was "what words"? Regardless, I want my words to be healing not painful.

The verse that spoke most to me is Prov 12:25. Even when I'm having a difficult day, I should try to encourage the other person I'm talking with. It will encourage them, and uplift their spirits, helping them with things they may be struggling with.

12:18 Spoke to me the most also. Me and my husband are really working on the way we speak to each other. We say we love each other so much, but where are the supportive, encouraging, trusting, and loving words?

Carol-

I recently watched that movie, 300, and had the SAME vision when I read verse 12:18. A pretty graphic but good movie!
